How do I get started?
Whether or not you know anything about rallying, or even perhaps have some driving experience, you could feel getting started a bit daunting, so let's help by explaining how you do it.
What does it take to be a Junior Rally Driver?
You must be aged 14 - 17 and at least 1.4 metres tall.
You need to be a member of a Scottish car club that is recognised by Motorsport UK and registered with the Scottish Association of Motor Sports Clubs. Some clubs offer free membership for junior members.
Let the Championship know you are interested by contacting the Coordinator.
Be assessed on your driving ability:
1. Pass the Motorsport UK BARS (British Association of Rally Schools) test. This can be carried out at Knockhill Racing Circuit or other approved locations across the UK and includes an assessment of driving skills and a test of your knowledge of rally rules and regulations.
2. Successfully complete three Production Car Autotests (PCAs) or AutoSOLOs. At least one of these must be observed by a Championship representative. Your own or another local car club may organise suitable events or the Championship can help you find them.
Alternatively, you can successfully complete a two-hour instruction/assessment session at a Motorsport UK approved rally school with a BARS registered instructor plus complete one PCA/AutoSOLO or participate in a driving activity at a Championship test or training day.
3. Successfully complete a simple set of car handling exercises.
What if I haven't driven a car before?
If you have not yet driven a car, before you apply for your BARS test you may be interested in the
Teen Drive experiences offered by Knockhill Racing Circuit and open to 13-17 year olds. Prices are £145 for Teen Drive, and £179 for Teen Drive 2 (as at January 2026).
You might also find other driving experiences available in your local area.
What does it all cost?
Each competitor will have their own idea about what they want to spend on specific items so this list is aimed at the least cost option. You might find that some suppliers offer discounts to Junior drivers and you may be able to find some items secondhand.
